Distractions, we ALL have them!
As im reading Amusing Ourselves to Death, I think of how frequently we are distracted by the media. We have people who go to the movies everyday, someone who have to watch their favorite t.v. show or else they get depressed, and gamers who get all worked up about having to buy a video game and end up getting mad at it. True we sometimes enjoy ourselves with the media, but we also in a way hurt ourselves. People tend to get more lazy and distracted the more frequent they are comfortable or in otherwords doing something they like. To not be amusing ourselves we need to be moving. Not neccessarily exercising but just doing something that requires some time of thinking or movement. Im not saying we must be doing something that makes our brains or bodies hurt all the time, but we need a balance. For me I try to divide my time up so I don't stress myself out too much to the point were I decide to in a way "give up". If people at least give the effort to make a stable balance then we wouldn't be amusing ourselves to death. Just something to think about.

Ammon, you have made a very captivating point. When I am not engaging in an activity that keeps my interest, I find myself acting unstable or completely reckless, thus I do not finish the work that I am responsible of completing. I have become disgusted with this type of comfort you are talking about, it is almost in the same boat with eating comfort food, this time it just takes the form of entertainment. However, in the same effect, what are books and conversations but a form of entertainment to feel comfortable? I agree, we need a balance. For example, I tend to take walks when I have high levels of stress, and even if it sacrifices an hour of studying, it still seems to calm me down. What is peculiar is that it makes it easier for me to study when I arrive back home. As you have said, I think that people need to make an effort, however, I believe they cannot do so on their own. They need support, and in the end, some kind of incentive to change their habits. I am afraid it is just human nature.

ReplyDeletePoirier is right, it's just human nature and he answers your post perfectly. We have the choice to be lazy Americans or the right to choose the other path of making an effort. But it's just too easy to be lazy. I myself just read a book when I feel stressed out or hit a tennis ball against the wall. And I don't care what any one says, that video will always be funny.
OH MY GOD. Was that for real? Or two brothers playing for YouTube?
ReplyDeleteIt has been a subject of much debate Ms. Fletcher. Yes, because that is what the intellectuals of our days ponder about, whether or not YouTube videos are real or not. However, it seems to be that this particular video is real. There are about five other videos with the same two brothers, and every time the one brother is freaking out while the other hides the camera. The video Breahna posted, on the other hand is (up to this current moment) considered real. A shame, more so about the subject matter he is freaking out about, or more so that this is now the entertainment that we find ourselves enslaved to everyday?
ReplyDeleteThat young man has a problem bigger than a WoW addiction; he has a problem with impulse control. I am having trouble believing this is not staged, especially if these brothers are on YouTube multiple times. But let's just say it is real. What is going to happen to this poor kid when he encounters an actual tragedy? When he gets a driver's license and gets behind the wheel? When a girl tells him no? When a child defies him? Sorry Breahna, I could only see this as funny if it were staged; if it's real, I feel like I'm looking at a lost soul, someone who is going to end up institutionalized in one way or another...prison or hospital.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Fletcher, it is not at all real. A television show called Tosh 2.0 aired the clip and they boys confessed that it is fake and the only set it up on Youtube to get views (Of course they confessed after they hit a hundred million views.)
ReplyDeleteGlad you guys understand were im coming from. And Poirier your right we need someone pushing us throughout life. Otherwise we would all be bums.
ReplyDeleteI am so relieved that this little demonstration was staged. Thank goodness.
