*I don't know if this would count as one of the required posts or not, but it doesn't matter. I just want to know your opinions.
There's a song called "Hug Me" by the band Meg & Dia, and I don't know if it's a coincidence but a lot of the lyrics go with Brave New World. This took me by surprise because one day, I was listening to the song and a lot of the words they were saying really reminded me of the book. I think it's crazy that a band would write a song based on the book. BUT is it the whole song or just some of the words that are coincidently flow with the book? Here are some quotes from the song:
"... You're lazy, selfish, but you were raised that way. It's a whore that here was bred. I'll take your pants, you take my hair, and let us dance and cheer to happy and depressed."
Lazy and selfish could be used to describe the whole civilization in Brave New World. Everyone was raised with helicopters, and everything pretty much done for them. I guess you could describe their society full of whores because they were sleeping around with everyone, and it was okay because they were raised that way. Happy and depressed could be used to talk about soma because they were technically happy after they took it, but underneath everything they were reallyt depressed.
"Hug me 'til you drug me, honey, hug me. Drug me 'til you love me, honey, love me anyway."
This was what one of the songs said while Lenina was dancing at the club, and this is also what she said when she was trying to "do it" with John the Savage.
"...I can't lie, I was brainwashed to be honest in this brave new world that slowly passes by."
Did they ever lie in Brave New World? I don't think so... Does the brave new world slowly pass by because it is the same things everyday? Everyone is happy, and when something bad happens they take soma.
"By the way, I never liked your hands on me. Never liked your ideas of what is beautiful or real or truly holy. And I must say you've thrown your apathy away. Grown back into your diapers, will you die first, before admit the truth?"
John never wanted Lenina's hands on him because it was immoral. Mustapha Mond never liked John telling him about God because it wasn't allowed in his society. He got in trouble for throwing out all of the soma which was him telling them they were free and showing them true emotion; what was real. Did John die before admitting the truth? The truth being that he did not fit in to the savage world or the civilized world. Did he do both? He knew he didn't fit in, so he killed himself.
My question is: Am I overthinking this or does it really have to do with the book? Sometimes people overthink things when they are shown something and they try to apply it to real life. Like me and the movie Inception, for example. After I saw the movie, I walked around wondering if my life was really a dream. Ha ha.

No I don't think your over thinking instead I would call it an observation haha. I tend to do the same thing that your doing were you think is it a dream? And why would song lyrics go along with this "perfect society". It is just all a bundled up confusion. The song I think is referring to maybe the writers wants. Because when things get hard for people they tend to just take the easy way out.
ReplyDeleteI googled it (calm down, Mrs. Fletcher) and it turns out the song is based on Brave New World after all. It also isn't the first song based on Brave New World.
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah? Guess I wasn't overthinking after all.
ReplyDeleteDo you mean by this band or overall other songs are based on the book , too?
Other songs by other bands. And in fact whole albums by Rock bands such as Iron Maiden and Styx.
ReplyDeleteIron Maiden actually has a song titled after the book, at first I thought it was a coincidence but I stand corrected, hahaha.
