This subject have been discussed by Sarah Wolstoncroft in "Death in Utopia" where she hypothesis that people in
Brave New World die by specific amount of chemicals that are put into their bloodstream. However, I have a different point of view on how people die in the utopia society. In chapter seven, Bernard told Lenina that people age until about sixty and then they die an din the beginning of chapter eleven where a docter told John that soma takes a few years off your lifespan. Based off the information, I hypothesis that soma is the thing that caused the people to die because the people in the civilized societies frequently take soma where it caused gradually decrease in their lifespan until death. However, this is my idea on how people die in
Brave New World and I would like other peoples' idea on how people die in a perfect society.
I can't seem to remember the specifics, but I do know that people DO NOT age at all, and then at 60, they pull the plug at that death home somehow or another. Probably a soma overdose of some kind.
ReplyDeleteIn my perfect society, when I reach the age of 99, I will be shot out of a cannon right into a volcano.
That... seems... painful...
ReplyDeleteWhere do you--never mind.
Oh my. That is a very original way to go Mrs. Fletcher. I hope to go at the age of 90 during a nap right after a really good dinner.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Fletcher, I hope that volcano would be dormant at the time, and there would be a soft sea of pillows to safely catch you. Right?....Right?
ReplyDeleteDying while sleeping never was my thing. I always say, "wouldn't it suck if you go to sleep and never wake up?"
ReplyDeleteThank you all for NOT saying that they would have to build an extra wide mouth cannon for the job. That was extremely kind of you, and I take it as a sign of your excellent characters.
ReplyDeleteRaul, did you see Inception? That limbo state seemed pretty terrifying to me.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the credit of the subject, and I like your take on it. It would make sense for the soma to kill them. The only point I have to make against your opinion is the fact that for soma to kill them by age 60, they would have to continuously take it. Would this mean that people like Bernard Marx, who have way less than say Henry Foster, would have their lives extended past 60? Let me know what you think.
ReplyDeleteSarah, I think that all people like Bernard Marx would live their lives past age 60 since they don't take as much soma. Also, I think that those people like Marx would know around what age they would live up to in those isolated areas such as a island.
ReplyDeleteI did not see Inception, Mrs. Fletcher. I've been busy in San Francisco. Speaking of which, I have to return to L.A. to drop off my notebook.
