Amusing Ourselves to Death made me realize the incoherence that has gradually been rising because of technology and the media. Advertisement is a great example of how irrelevant we have become. Every time I watch a new television commercial I can not help but to realize that they are becoming more and more irrelevant. At times the commercials do not even relate to the product that they are advertising. I can think of many occasions where I was left dumbfounded after viewing a television commercial. They are so remote that all I can do after viewing the commercial is ask myself, what? As a matter of fact I was talking about this with my friends today. I was wondering if anyone felt this way after watching a commercial so I asked for their opinions and they agreed. This made me certain that others must feel the same way and must ask themselves these same questions.
Has incoherence gone so far as to make the simplest things incomprehensible? How far will incoherence go?
When I read this post, I have to say the first thought that came to my mind was that this incoherence is highly enjoyable. For example, everything on television has become so predictable. The comedy in these incoherent commercials, and sometimes even shows, has made television amusing again. This point has been driven so often that I may even pay attention to the incoherent commercial while flipping through channels without even looking to see what channel or what show is on.
ReplyDeletePostman predicted that the Western world would be responsible for this incoherence, but I have to say that as a culture of assimilated world views, we have to put some blame on the world's people in general.
Incoherence, I believe, will go perhaps a little farther, but will eventually find itself at a stump. With the test of time, the chances are we will once again find no pleasure in such random acts, and will demand order. Our general population may not be intelligent, but we do know what entertains us, and that is not repetition, even if that repetition is an inconceivable chaos.
