Would we be able to survive in Brave New World?

The ending of Brave New World was truly upsetting to me. I had grown attached to the character John and reading about his death as the ending of the book was a bit disappointing. At times I felt his pain when the society of Brave New world would make him suffer and feel guilt. All of his suffering made me think to myself, " How could someone not kill themselves?" It also made me wonder if anyone of our society would survive in a world like the one illustrated in Brave New World? Would the different life styles be to much to bare? I believe that many of us would not be able to survive for a long period of time in such a society. Our morals would with no doubt clash to an extreme. We would fell a great amount of guilt and pain like John did. Of course I do believe their would be many who would not mind to live in a society like the one presented in Brave New World. People who were not brought up with morals, who dislike having a family, who did not believe in religion, and who did not enjoy having relationships etc. These types of people would thrive in such a society.

  1. I'm not sure we would kill ourselves in a society like Brave New World. As Neil Postman pointed out, the world of Huxley's novel isn't far from our own. Our world is almost a mixture between Shakespeare's world with marriage, love, and death and the society of London with loose morals, drugs, and the like. John was closely attached to the Shakespearian world that he'd read over and over again as a child. This is why he couldn't adapt to the "brave new world". We would have trouble adapting to either extreme I believe. I wouldn't like being put in to a world where my parents could choose who I marry, but just the same, I wouldn't appreciate being put in a place where "i love you" was just another way of saying "let's have sex".

  2. I think that we are how we are because it is what we are used to. If we were born in a life like "brave new world" I'd probly be sorry for those living in what we do live now. Seeing the different ways of life I am more than happy living how we live. I would rather love and have family and some suffering than everything being chosen and perfect. It is only perfect and free of suffering because everything that for us is meant alot for a world like "brave new world" it is meant nothing. Life,Love,Family, Religion, etc. is nothing in "brave new world" where to us its alot. Shakespearian world i hadnt actually compared it to our life but Melissa you are most definitly correct our life is simialr to it, which is why it was even harder for john to get customed to "brave new world". One because he already lived in what we call the real world, and two because he really new his shakespeare and based life upon that.

  3. I agree with Erica. People in Huxley's world look down on our lifestyle as bizarre. But, don't we think people in the early times (80s and 90s perhaps) had it rough? No phones, medical advances, etc. I know I do. The point is, as every new time period comes around, people will look down on the lifestyles of earlier times as harsh, or weird.

Also, I think we COULD survive... But, WOULD we?... That is a hard question. You see, in Huxley's world, the people tolerated their ways. It is all most of them know. We have Shakespeare, the Bible and poems; Huxley's world doesn't. What I'm trying to say is that every society has different morals that must be accepted if you want to thrive.
