what is beauty?

Yesterday I heard my mom talking about how she was getting so fat, I then told her she was not fat and she looks fine. This made me a little mad though. Why was being thin so serious to her? Because the media is constantly pounding the image of beauty into our minds. Apparently beauty is a half starved woman without glasses and fizzy hair is absolutely not allowed. We see it on t.v., in movies, and in magazines. Then people end up on diet pills and ridiculous diets and buying silly work out machines( like the shake weight) and being totally insecure. So my point here is that the media is pressing these images on us and telling us that if we dont look like that we are ugly, obese, and a loser, but we do not need to conform to thinking this, you can be beautiful with a crooked tooth or glasses. You can be beautiful with what would be considered to be a couple extra pounds or frizzy hair. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and perfection isn't always best.

  1. I agree with you that rampant commercials and messages are shaping the self images of people. However, the self help industry is huge and will always be because it is a thriving market that is supported by celebrities and pro athletes. It is a vicious cycle.

I hate seeing those half starved models and everyones, like wow there so beautiful! There ankles are the size of their thighs that is so unhealthy and unattractive.

  3. Sometimes people can't help the way they look. Just because some people that have "extra lb's" look at skinny people and think they're gorgeous doesn't mean that the skinny person thinks they themselves look gorgeous, for all we know the skinny chick may think the thicker girl is gorgeous and want to look like her. Just because one is skinny does not at all mean she likes it, skinny girls are just like rounder girls--they have goals. But not always to lose weight, but to actually gain weight. You see in the magazines about articles about how to LOSE 10 POUNDS IN 10 DAYS, but how about we formulate some articles about how to GAIN HEALTHY POUNDS NATURALLY? I would love to read that. Perfection isn't always best, but who says no glasses, flat hair and bones and skin is perfect?

Who in the world labeled that as perfection?

  4. Everyone has there own image and can be found beautiful in there own way. Some people actually look better thicker than thin, or with glasses than without. Its wierd but I've seen it. It is true how they try to make it seem as though beauty is this thin looking girl with perfect everything and i find that wrong. Confidence also has alot to do with it. A thick girl can be beautiful if she has confidence and shows that shes not affected of the fact that shes not a stick, but when insecurity is shown it sometimes does take away some of their potential beauty.

  5. I agree that the magazines and television are pressuring people on what they should look like using actresses and models but people don't really look like them in real life. A few days ago I watched a episode of the Twilight Zone called "Eye of the Beholder" in where a woman was portrayed as ugly and in their world they would banish or kill those who are deformed, in the whole episode she was using a mask to cover her face and at the end it was reveal that she was beautiful but everyone else was were deform. I guess the point was that beauty can only be defined by the beholder.
