Looks over Skills

Today, people are able to get jobs because of their looks and not if they are able to do the job well. Postman said that people in television are hired because of their appearance which is the main focus and not what is being said. In today's society, people who can do a job proficiently but are ordinary looking are not able to get the job because people with the "looks" who have no skills would have a better chance. This shows how today's society is choosing people with good looks to get jobs that they could not perform the job well. Since people with good looks are chosen, people who are ordinary looking would not get chosen for the job. If this is to continue, eventually people with "looks" and no skill would be able to get into jobs which would make the society in disorder and not be able to fix the problem. In order to fix this, I think that people who are hiring should stop caring about looks so much and more about people who can get the job done. However, I think that this would be very hard in today's society where it is slim chance for everyone to believe that people with the skills should get hired and not the one with the "looks". One problem is that using attractive people in jobs and television would get more money than someone who looks ordinary. Since most people would do almost anything to get more money, I find it hard for everyone to believe that the "looks" do not count and that it is the skills that matters. Is the only way for people who can do the job well is that they have the "looks", too. I would like other peoples' responses to this question.

  1. Andy, I had made a post similar to this in early June:

The concept of 'looks' over 'skills' is getting WAY out of control. I definitely agree with what you said, and I think it is really pathetic. Of course, I believe that there are some exceptions. Example: a model. You need to be attractive to be a model, and you don't really have to be smart. Also, a clothing store greeter would apply in this situation. These scenarios are slim, though. A majority of managers are looking for looks-which makes sense. But, I also think looks aren't EVERYTHING. Managers should hire people with decent looks AND potential working skills. They need well rounded employees, not necessarily 'the model type'.

Also, Andy, did you catch the part in Postman's book where he talks about newscasters and their looks? He talked about how newscasters spend more time in front of the mirror than the time they spend studying their scripts. Hmmm... something is really wrong with this picture.

  2. I agree with you Joey that people should hire well rounded employees. In addition, I agree on how jobs such as models do need the people to be attractive and do not have to be smart. Though I wish that the people who hire the models would choose people who are more natural looking to what most women are like and not people who are very thin. Also, I didn't catch that part in Postman's book. Joey, I must have missed it while reading.
