What would YOU or could YOU do?

In chapter 18 John secludes himself to the abandoned lighthouse where he whips himself repeatedly to remove the toxins of civilization. John felt so strongly about something he couldn't control that he cause physical harm to himself to try to relieve some of the mental pain that he felt. People often feel like the only way they can simply just feel better is to cause physical harm on themselves. My question to all of you all is do you just pity these types of people or do you generally try to help them. Or do you feel as if its there problem and it has nothing to do with you so why should you interfere? Or even feel like you're better than them and you are not responsible for whatever they do to themselves? The people of the World State do not know how to deal with this. So when someone feels overwhelmed or miserable or any emotions the are given soma so that they do not have to feel any more. Everyone need someone...but how to you cope with the fact that someone is leading you in the wrong direction but you care for that person? Could you morally watch someone damage themselves, whatever the case may be, and stand by and do nothing to help?
