"Technology Talk"

Today, I was on Facebook (of course), and I was talking to my mom's friend. Both of them kept spelling things wrong so, I told them they need to start spelling words right. Ha ha. Some of our conversation:

Her friend: ahh its stil ghetto...haha so id care...haha good nite im tired...
My mom: @Gio and Brittany! wowowow you to!
Me: You guys both need to learn how to spell! This is how you spell night and when you are saying it's two of us it is two
Her friend: thats online spelling...u know. night=nite, you=u and stuff like that...

*I would post the link but, that would send you to my mom's facebook page and that would kind of be weird.

But, it made me realize how lazy communicating through technology makes us. Is it really hard to take a couple seconds and hit a few more keys? Even in text messages, people abbreviate a lot of things. I am guilty of this, too. I shorten because and put "cuz." It makes me sad that because technology has made it so easy to communicate, we become lazy and spell everything wrong.

Nope. Not at all. But here's the logic employed when making the decision to write like that: "Well, this isn't a test, and the person on the other end of this won't mind if I spell things incorrectly, so what the heck?" Thus, "because" turns into "cuz" and "where are you" turns into "wer r u" and so forth.

  2. Just like you Brittany, I have a habit of shortening my words when texting. Although this is convenient, it really is a bad habit. Many times, whether writing on this blog or working on homework, I catch myself shortening words, such as "cuz" or "wen".

In general, I think that the advancements in our technology, even beyond communication, have led us to become a more lazy people due to the convenience that it provides for us.

  3. I Agree with Brittany. I always try my best to spell out each word and use appropriate abreviation. Then again I think I do that because I don"t have the knack for text talk. sometimes I don't understand a text because it has too many abriviations. Text talk is too complicated i wish everyone would just spell things out.

  4. When I text someone I will sometimes shorten words like "because" in to "cuz" or "you" in to "u" to save character length if they have limited texting or I'm a few characters over the "new page". Other than that though, I usually try to stay pretty literate. Perhaps the habit of "leetspeaking" started with the character limit on phones texting function, or maybe even computers. But now? It actually annoys me sometimes when I receive a text that I have to decipher.

  5. I also agree with what you're saying. And I too am guitly for beng lazy and texting abriviations, but I think everyone is. It just seems like an easier way to say something short and quick like Raul said : "where are you" to "wer r u". It's somthing short and quick.

  6. I'm glad to read this thread. I used to get mocked for spelling things out when I text, but the tide seems to be turning.

  7. STFU. I'm not going to wrie my words out in my texts because no matter what, its going to take longer to type than saying a sentence so i dont see anything wrong wittit.
    PS stfu was a joke.

  9. Same here Mrs. Fletcher, people constantly ask me why I spell things out over the computer and while texting. I don't know why I do, it just looks better I guess? My dad likes to call me 'Ms. Spell Check' because I always correct people with their grammar including him, I just cannot stand bad grammar such as 'mines' and 'hurted', I dislike it very much.

  10. Brittany, it isn’t harder to just hit more keys. Many of my family members think that texting (really supposed to be called Text Messaging which people hardly say) was created to say things quick and easy. When people constantly type like, "wen r u gunna go?” instead of: "When are you going to go?” it gets pretty irritating, I can understand once in a while. Personally, I like to write things out, in a way it makes me feel more intelligent? Although I do have a habit of dragging on words such as: "heeeey".
