When you were a child how many times did you watch The Lion King? How many Disney movies did you watch, period? Now that you're older have you begun to notice a certain type of pattern in it? Or have you become so accustomed you don't even notice? Disney may at first glance simply be a producer of your favorite movies and fond childhood memories but let's dig a little deeper. For example: Beauty and the Beast. Remember that flashback where they told the story of how the Beast became the beast? The prince guy regected her because she was ugly. He was told that he shouldn't judge people on how they look before she turned into a beautiful enchantress and cursed and hated him because he was so ugly. Not just an enchantress they said--but a
beautiful enchantress. See what I'm saying? Also, notice how they treat that one dude's little lackey guy? They all treat him like crap because he doesn't meet the standards of the "handsome man." Nice pecs, sleek hair, etc. Of course they don't directly say it but it's definitely there. These themes can be seen in nearly every single disney movie. I have more examples of this and plan to get more in depth in the next post so respond please!
Oh Jasmine, I am a HUGE fan of Disney! You asked how many times I've seen the Disney movies. "The Lion King" and "Beauty and the Beast" actually are my two favorite Disney classics(aside from "Pinocchio" and "Snow White"), and I've seen those movies probably 100 times, each one from start to finish (not exaggerating)! My mom put a Disney V.H.S. movie on for my sister and I EVERY night before bed. Even though this topic doesn't relate very much to the summer homework, it's still interesting.(not one of my 8 comments)
ReplyDeleteActually, if you go on youtube.com and type in "Disney subliminal messages", you will be so shocked, your jaw will hit the floor... literally! Bad words, sexual icons, and racial scenes are all hidden in these 'children' films. When your very little, you don't notice, but now that I'm sixteen, I think to myself," How did I not notice that?" I had actually talked about "Beauty and the Beast" in a post of mine at the beginning of July called "Judging Before Knowing... That's A Shame!" I had talked about the main theme, appearance on the outside versus what is on the inside. I focused on the good of the movie, not the bad like you did, Jasmine. But you're right! Gaston's side kick, Lefou, is looked down on as worthless, and ugly. Gaston punches Lefou in the face when he sings the fabled "Gaston" song at the bar, and he bosses him around. Poor Lefou! This is very prejudicial and I never thought about this, Jasmine.
When you watch movies like "The Little Mermaid" or "Beauty and the Beast", it is mostly for entertainment, right? I have been watching "Snow White" a lot recently with my two-year-old neighbor because she loves Dopey. Why? Because she is amused by the dancing dwarfs and the singing princess. She likes to be terrified of the wicked queen. Not to knock the movie down against its bad messages. It's something that you only notice when you're older.
I'm so happy you saw it that way! I'm not knocking it and i totally get what you're saying because when i was young I had no idea it was full of all that. But maybe when we get older subconsciounsly we make decisions based on the subliminal messages and we just don't know it! I'm planning to expand next post!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you! And, it does relate to Brave New World. They put ideas in the heads of the children in their society, starting after birth. While their methods are more direct, it seems that our own society has ways of implementing ideas also! With subliminal messages of what's acceptable and what's ugly or bad, children from a young age are taught what to think about these ideas. Some children, like Joey and his sister, are even presented with these ideas EVERY NIGHT. And, like you said, it's not until later in their lives that they begin to realize that the messages were even there in the first place. And, some people may not notice at all, leaving the damage done and unable to be retracted.
ReplyDeleteOh ya, I guess it does relate to Brave New World. Children at a young age are taught many different ideas. When I was little, my sister and I ALWAYS saw a Disney movie. That does make sense, Sarah.
