America's biggest problem today is everyone lies, politicians lie, movie stars lie, athletes lie, need I go on? These people are our role models since we see them on T.V every day. If our Politicians are lying why shouldn't we do it?
The difference is when they lie it's on T.V and they look good doing it and if they get caught, well... more publicity for them.
If we lie, we lose respectability, our credit, and even the ones we love/care about, why is that? Is it because we don't look good when were lying? If I went on T.V and lied don't you think I would be more easily forgiven then if I lied to just a crowd of people while I was giving a speech in the school gym?
When the BP oil spill first started they said it was leaking (I think) 50,000 gallons a day, the next week they said sorry we "miscalculated" (lied) its leaking 4,200,000 gallons a day. How can you make such a big mistake? About five weeks ago they said they would have it stopped from leaking. Four weeks ago they said they would have it stopped from leaking. Three weeks ago they said they would have it stopped. I looked and still to this day I don't know if they have it stopped.

Actually David the oil spill is supposed to be officially plugged up today... they're just waiting for the concrete to dry, but I see your point.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is I don't think it has as much to do with TV as it does with being a celebrity. We tend to put celebrities on a pedestal as if they're better than us, and when they do mess up we often just think "oh well, they are human after all" and forgiven just like that.

ReplyDeleteYou're generalizing a lot of people there. Why do people feel the need to constantly add a title to others? What does it matter if a movie star lies in an interview? People are proving to be silly by being outraged. I can see why anger would arouse if an athlete lied about using steroids or is a politician lied about where tax money is going, but to overreact to a politician hiding his sexual orientation (as an example of lying) is a little dumb.
Also, I don't think I'm alone here when I say I don't consider every person I see on TV as my role model. Any person on television does not automatically earn my respect.
Honestly I think that America's biggest problem is greed, not lies. In fact, I think that people lie because they are greedy. Cutting corners to save money, or lying to increase publicity, it is all a form of greed. It is not necessarily money-wise. You could be greedy for "fame" or "fortune" or many other things. Its human nature to be greedy though, a primal instinct to help us survive, and it is hard to fight. The more you have the more you want sadly and many people become corrupt and "evil" because of greed.

ReplyDeleteWhat Carina said is true. If they were not celebrities, they would have to work to get credibility back. Normal people in our society have to work hard to get trust back. They should have to do so as well.

ReplyDeleteI would have to disagree with you there David. I think that if just anyone lies, whether it be on TV, radio, or in real life, it causes one to lose their belief in the person who lied. Although they do gain publicity, what gives them the right to lie to anyone and what more can they gain from it? When anyone lies it just worsens their reputation despite their title.
