news as entertainment?!? no good.
As I am reaching the end to Amusing Ourselves to Death, I start receiving answers to my previous questions. I kept wondering why t.v couldn't be seen as educational just as books. The fact that in books its just words makes it less interesting to some, but as news do we really want them to entertain us or to get us to realize what is going on in the world? The news on television only gives about a minute per story which makes it seem not as important because they dont even spend to much time on it. They tried to make news interesting by adding music and visual pictures but really that only makes us not realize things as they are. I know that the only news that catches my attention is the one where they cut off the tv nd its an alert. Contains no music, no picture, its just a blak screen with tiny letters on the bottom. T.V is really uneducational because of the fact that they try to make things entertaining when by entertaining they're taking away the educational part of it. I was sitting home watching "Jersey Shore" which is really a pointless show to watch but it entertains me...then i read this and think wow..

Erica, about the news topic, I really agree with you. In a weird way, I love watching the news, it informs me and isn’t quite boring. I dislike that they will run through the important stories and don’t give me as much information as I’d like or if I want to show my brother something and I come back they usually have long left the subject. I think they understand that our society has such a low attention span that they need to be as fast and informative as possible. They bring in celebrity news as well, which is completely unnecessary.
ReplyDeleteI only watch the news if I need the weather or if I'm up at 6am with nothing to do, but I find this program rather wierd.
ReplyDeleteI remember hearing a depressing topic about someone who got murdered, but afterward the reporter painted a small smile on her face and said something along the lines of "Join us later for our battle of the bands to see which local band is your favorite!"
Err, doesn't anyone find that funky? I agree with Postman when he says that the news has turned into any other show meant for entertainment.
