Do we even know our surroundings?

My brother just began working for the city this summer and just two days ago he got home from work and was like " Did u know in front of the library there is a big book in the middle of a garden?" and it's like I think so. He had no clue of that even though we go to that library. We are always on our phones txting not even looking around anymore. There is also a plaza the bellflower plaza with a foodcourt and its really nice actually but it is just always empty. That was the place people would meet up and hang out, now all we do is go home on facebook, twitter, myspace etc. we have no lives. technology really became a public discourse. It's taking me a book to start seeing this, I just wonder how Neil thought of this because if it wasn't for me reading this i doubt it would have ever popped in my head. I've read some posts and we all find it sad how the world depends on so much technology. And how technology has really been taking us away from the real world and how it should be. It is useful and nice to have some technology when it is used correctly but we use it an exagerated amount. Although we realize it are any of us even going to stop using it? Probly not, because ill admit it myself, i doubt i could not use my phone or go online. but i do realize that its sad to what it has become.

  1. There are 97 kids signed up for the blog. I still need you to put a last name when you post. We talked about this before, and maybe you assumed that from that point on, I would automatically know who you are. That is not the case. I don't want to scan that list when I've already asked you to include a last name.

  2. Erica, I completely agree. Once we start a new technological trend, we can't get enough of it. Texting, television, and computers have definitely affected us, positively and negatively. As you had mentioned, even though we know we shouldn't depend so much on technology, we do it anyway. Why? Because we love it .We are addicted to it.

Postman had talked about how people in the colonial times read books ALL the time. Why can't we be the same? Well, back then, there really wasn't much that Americans could do. They did not have the technological advances that we do today. Even though technology is a brainwasher, it is also very helpful. Imagine a world without phones, cars, and medical advances... Could we hold it together, or would the human race crumble? The point is we should use technology at a minimum.

  3. I don't think we will ever stop using technology. Yes, it's wonderful we realize that we aren't as well read or subject to sitting for long discussions as people in the past, but these are modern times. Things change, and we need to accept that technology is something that will always improve. I don't want to imagine a world without phones, cars, and medical advances... I like where technology is heading, but that doesn't mean I'm excluding reading or playing outside from my life. The times we are living in today have exploded in electronics and science, but if given enough time, I'm sure people will learn to balance the newest technologies and life.

I think people should admit they like their phones and iPods, without feeling they are a bad person for it.
