Apparently Huxley experimented with LSD and other psychedelic drugs, and he came to the conclusion that they gave users the same effect attained when mystics or priests fast, pray, and meditate. Also soma is believed to be a hallucinogenic drug used by ancient Indian Vedic cults as a part of their ceremonies. Knowing this information, I believe I understand why Huxley named his drug soma. Soma in the Indian cults was used for the sake of religious enlightenment while soma in the novel was used to pacify the masses and provide as an alternative to religion. Huxley cleverly named his drug soma in order to take advantage of the irony.

Yes. Although in the novel soma is used more than as a mere substitute for religion. It's used to comfort people, to provide relief for the discomforts this Utopian society fails to weed out. "A gramme is better than a damn."
