So I was watching Big Brother the other day and I was thinking, Wow everyone in this show is good looking. It’s weird because Big Brother is suppose to be a Reality TV Show, and I’m pretty sure there were not-good-looking people that applied to be on the show, so where are they? Reality show are suppose to show Reality, not perfect fake people! I think that the producers of most shows hire “pretty” people because they think that that is who the viewers will look up to and aspire to be like, which shows how television has changed our views over the years.
This thought reminded me of Neil Postman’s idea in chapter one when he was talking about the newscasters spending more time with their hair dryers than with their stories. I think this is really sad. That television is deciding who becomes the pretty and the ugly. I believe that this growing trend to look like the people on the television screen is showing America’s changing views on what is acceptable. And I find it sad that we need to base who we are on what the people on TV look like and act like, because these people are fake, and we should be able to differentiate between the fake, yet amusing entertainment the TV offers, and the real world.

Your post reminded me of this... there is a reality TV channel called TruTV. Just to fight the idea that reality shows are stupid and scripted they have this catch phrase "TruTV not reality, actuality."
ReplyDeleteJust thought that was interesting.
You're right, it isn't fair to just hire pretty people for a reality show. But hey, I guess its show biz. I belivie that the t.v. producers feel that if they hire the pretty people then they would get more veiwers. That's probably part of the reason at least. Like I said, it's all part of the show biz
ReplyDeleteWhen you talked about Big Brother and how they are all good looking it reminds me of the movies. How many movies are out there that has good looking actors and actresses? There's alot. The industry make us believe that it is a TRUE reality show, when it isn't. The industry is still encouraging looks, the only exception of physical appearance, is wealth.
