The Lounge
This is Asher Roth, some might know him as "the white guy who sings I Love College." That's true, but to me he's one of the most underrated and truly talented rappers of the new school. His song above called "The Lounge" (don't worry Mrs. Fletcher its clean!) he talks about racial segregation and stereotypes in hip-hop particularly from his stand point as a white rapper from a middle class suburb. Now, how does this relate to our books? To me, Asher reminds me of Bernard Marx in Brave New World who is ridiculed and looked down upon because of his small stature compared to other Alpha Pluses. Asher is constantly called a "one hit wonder" and is looked down upon as an Eminem wannabe even though his music skills are on par with many and was praised by Eminem himself! Asher makes music that talks back to his "haters" while Bernard stayed self-conscious and tried to show others he was worthy. Bernard and Asher are looked down upon because their characteristics don't fit in mold of the status quo. So my question is, does are society make us harbor negative feelings about those who try to break the status quo?

Absolutely Quang. It is our natural instinct to fear what we don't understand, and that fear often becomes anger and hatred since we don't want to admit that we are afraid.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite quotes explains this:
(You might remember it from the short before Toy Story 3)
"Fear of the unknown. They are afraid of new ideas. They are loaded with prejudices, not based upon anything in reality, but based on… if something is new, I reject it immediately because it’s frightening to me. What they do instead is just stay with the familiar. You know, to me, the most beautiful things in all the universe, are the most mysterious."
