More resources, less creative ideas?

It seems like the more we depend our lives with the work of technology, less creative ideas are produced. It shows within movies, television series, etc. You would think that with a wide range of mediums, they'd be able to do more with their captivating storyline. Although that may be true within some areas, they don't seem to execute it in an interesting fashion.

All movies I have seen are recycled ideas but revamped to make it more "original." For example, I was disappointed in the movie "Karate Kid" only because I was a big fan of the original. What I also didn't understand was the fact it's called "Karate Kid" but the sensei is teaching him Kung Fu. I find that since many people know the original, it'll bring in big bucks and sadly, it did.

Movie producers are making movies that they think will get movie goers off the edge of their seat but I don't really find that recycled ideas is what they go for and it shows with people's reviews. What do you think will be the outcome in future movies? Will they flounder or do something daring?

  1. For the record, Kimberly: Karate orignally came from China, and is essentially a derivative of kung fu. I can verify this; my sister's sensei was a student of the original Mr. Miyagi. No kidding!

Anyway, recycled ideas are annoying. But do not fear. I think we may see some originality out of the industry yet. Just look at "Avatar" and "Inglourious Basterds". Very original movies that were not recycled or chose not to follow in a mold.

That is why I am very excited for the new movie "Inception". It seems bound to be a thriller with some intelligence, suspense, action, and above all, originality. So, originality is not dead yet.

  2. I do agree with you Kevin into all aspects. Original ideas are not dead but they are very scarce which probably fears me the most.

Some movies make it seem like as if telling dirty jokes throughout the whole entire movie and having those "WOW" effect every time will set the standard on what a good movie is. That's one of the originalities I have seen in this century but it isn't to my liking.

So pointing out those movies may shed some light on the movie industry.

  3. The way I think of it is that eventually the ideas for movies, television shows, and more will be have to be reused. Sooner or later, directors will have really NO ideas to make any movies which is sad, but true. Now they are just making movies to make a living.

  4. Hmm... I disagree.

It's not whether they can make ideas; it's whether the public will like them. They don't want to risk investing millions of dollars for a movie that might not market well. It's not about being able to make new ideas, it's about marketing and money. Like you said, it's the same story over and over again. But why? Because it works. Everyone knew the Karate Kid was gonna be based on the original, yet millions of people went. Why? Because it may be a recycled story, but it works. The figures support it. With a budget of 40 million and a gross revenue of over 210 million dollars, it's obvious the producers know what they're doing when they chose which movies to make, or which TV series air.

  5. I agree Kimberly. I use cliff notes to help me better understand books at times and that's me not deeply contemplating. But everyone needs a little help sometimes. And about movies, I hate sequels and follow ups, really. Like Kevin said, Inception is fresh and original, not to mention I am a huge Joseph Gordon-Levitt fan. The plot is made up from different movies by inspiration as JGL explains on Jimmy Fallon Live a night ago, but is completely different from the rest of mainstream movies.

  6. I partly agree with jpartida. I feel like ideas have all been thought up. There was a time when everything was new; cars, airplanes, televisions. Now everything has been thought up, a lot of things have been invented. Nothing that is brought up is new to anybody anymore.

  7. Actually you guys should have noticed in many movies that you watch they have basically the same plot or theme. They have the hero saves the day in many recent movies and its because thats what society wants to see. They want to see the hero win because it motivates them to succeed and to be better. So yes all the ideas have been thought up, but as long as they keep bringing in revenue the movie industry will keep at it.
