Where Would We Be Without Technology?

As I was playing my video games and watching my television shows, I got to thinking where would we be today without technology? Just think about it, without are technological advances in the last few centuries like cell phones, computers, vehicles, etc. where would we be? We would not be so advanced in the medical field like we are now, able to detect the health of people and catch diseases early, we would not be able to communicate with loved ones like we do now with the click of a button. And even transportation, it would take a lot longer to get to our destinations if we had no cars, or plains instead we had to walk every where. There are also many more things that are effected by technology. But this is just my opinion, what do you think?

  1. Manuel, the topic that you mentioned actually ties into our summer homework; did you know that? Here's why:

-"As a culture moves from orality to writing to printing to televising, its ideas of truth move with it." - Neil Postman, "Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business"

Key word... TELEVISING. How often do we, as individuals, watch T.V.? I would say, for about 99.9% of us here, every day. It is something that we have come to love because we have television screens. People are addicted to texting, because we have cell phones. People yearn to drive, because they can get a 'sleek' car. People communicate with 'facebook' and 'myspace', because we have computers. Get the picture?

Do you remember during the end of the school year when Mrs. Fletcher had challenged us to go a whole twenty-four hours without technology? Guess what, I had gone a whole forty-eight hours without a cell phone, ipod, T.V. and computer during a Confirmation retreat... I survived! It turns out we don't NEED these possessions, Manuel. We are just so addicted to them that we think we will 'die' without them. If we had never invented these products in the first place, no one would have ever become addicted to them, right? Of course, some things like cars and telephones are pretty important-so are medical advances. But, for the most part, I think that the human race could possibly do without some of our 'latest and greatest' advances in technology.

  2. I AGREE WITH JOEY WHOLE-HEARTEDLY! Cellphones, Ipods, and cameras are hardly necessities in life. But technology is not always the enemy. It would be ignorant to overlook the many advantages of the internet and television. Not only are these instruments crucial to the dispersion of information- thus furthering research and medicine- but we have caught many a criminal and found many missing persons using technological advances such as the Amber Alert and watching shows like America's Most Wanted. So to answer your question, I believe the world would be severely handicapped without technology, but everyone could use a retreat without their cellphone.

  3. You don't exactly need all those uses in technology (i.e. cameras, computers, phones) as an amusement of entertainment. What would you be doing if you weren't playing video games and watching your television shows? Most likely something more productive or maybe even be outside. Since technology is everywhere, we are bound to learn how to use them for useless and important tasks.

Like what Quiana said, it really would be ignorant to overlook all of the advantages they have given us. Advancing technology makes the world go round if we are not abusing it especially but we do anyway.

  4. I agree with Joey and Quiana on how some of today's technolgy such as cellphones and ipods are not needed in our lives but they help with our amusement of entertainment. However, some of today's technology help our lives such as the medicine and the improvement of crops to meet the growing population. In addition, I agree with Kimberly on how if we didn't have technology such as computers, phones, and cameras, we would do something productive. For example, I did Mrs. Fletcher's challenge and I have gone for more than 4 days which I did AP homework, read books, and help my parents work.

  5. Joey and Quina are absolutely right, if I do say so because I have spent the whole summer, pretty much without a cell phone, no cable, and a partially broken iPod. It isn't hard at all to get used to not using these things. We may think we're going to "die' if you don't have any of these for a few days, but actually you get a lot more done like Andy said. During the year when I didn't have a cell phone which meant no texting, I got a lot of homework done a lot quicker than usual and caught up on a lot of missed sleep. Not that I don't enjoy having a cell phone or any other piece of technology I’ve received, because i definitely love them, I just believe that a lot can be learned and come out of you setting those things down just for a second.

  6. Is this Manuel Falcon III? This may be the first time I've asked YOU this question, but it is not the first time I've asked. It is an irritant to have to hunt through four pages of names to find out if there is more than one Manuel, especially when I've SPECIFICALLY ASKED in the homework packet and on the blog for a name I can identify.

Dear Reader, ANYTHING you do that makes my grading more difficult or cumbersome irritates me and hurts you.
